Dayanita Singh, die sich selbst als „Offset-Künstlerin“ bezeichnet, nennt Gerhard Steidl ihren „Mitverschwörer“. Gemeinsam schaffen sie Publikationen, die das Buch als Objekt und seinen Platz im Kontext von Kunst und Verlagswesen neu definieren. Für sie ist ein Buch ein mobiles Konzept, das verschiedene Formen annimmt – als Leporello-Bücher in einer Schachtel, ein visueller Roman, ein Buch mit 88 unterschiedlichen Covern und vieles mehr. Mit der Offsetlithografie als kreatives Medium drucken Singh und Steidl Bilder in einer Qualität, die der von Ausstellungsdrucken entspricht.
Basierend auf Intuition, einer Leidenschaft für analoge Prozesse, einem tiefen Verständnis für Materialien, einem gesunden Misstrauen gegenüber Konventionen und nicht zuletzt einem Sinn für Humor, ist Singhs und Steidls Buchproduktion sowohl eine Blaupause als auch eine Inspiration für alle Fotograf*innen, die mit der Form des Buches arbeiten. Dayanita Singh wurde in Neu-Delhi, Indien, geboren. Sie studierte Visuelle Kommunikation am National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad sowie Fotojournalismus und Dokumentarfotografie am International Center of Photography in New York. Zu ihren jüngsten Einzelausstellungen zählen: Dayanita Singh: Pothi Khana, Minneapolis Institute of Art (2021); Museum Bhavan, Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (2017). Sie erhielt den Hasselblad Award 2022.
Gerhard Steidl, geboren in Göttingen, begann 1969 als Drucker und Gestalter zu arbeiteten. Er hat mit Künstler*innen wie Joseph Beuys, Marcel Broodthaers und Nam June Paik zusammengearbeitet. 1972 erschien mit Befragung der documenta das erste Steidl Buch. Es folgten politische Sachbücher, literarische Werke und ausgewählte Kunst- und Fotografiebände. Sein eigenes internationales Fotobuchprogramm rief Steidl im Jahr 1994 ins Leben. Mit Dayanita Singh arbeitet er seit über zwanzig Jahren zusammen.
Monte Packham wurde in Sydney geboren und schloss sein Jura- und Kunstgeschichtsstudium an der University of Sydney ab. Er schrieb unter anderem Concentric Circles (2011), ABC Photography (2016) und Living with Matisse, Picasso and Christo: Theodor Ahrenberg and His Collections (2018). Seit 2007 arbeitet er als Lektor im Steidl Verlag. Packham lebt in Berlin.

What’s the difference between building a book and simply making one? In this talk Dayanita Singh and her longtime printer and publisher Gerhard Steidl share the secrets of their collaboration. A self-declared “offset artist”, Singh calls Steidl her “co-conspirator” and together they craft publications that redefine the book as an object and its place in the worlds of art and publishing. For them a book is a mobile concept patiently realized in diverse forms – as a suite of accordion-fold booklets in a clamshell box, as a visual novel, a book with 88 cover variations, a collection of postcards, a fold-out poster…
Using offset lithography as a creative medium, Singh and Steidl print images of a quality that matches traditional exhibition prints. Singh accordingly displays her books in unorthodox ways that recast the boundaries of the museum/gallery and publishing: for example installing accordion booklets as the exhibition itself, and inviting buyers of the book to do the same at home – and thus become curators of her work. Based on intuition, a passion for analogue processes, a deep understanding of materials, a healthy suspicion of convention and not a little humour, Singh and Steidl’s book building is both a blueprint and inspiration for all photographers working in book form.

Gerhard Steidl, born in Göttingen, Germany, began working as a printer and designer in 1969. He has collaborated with artists* such as Joseph Beuys, Marcel Broodthaers and Nam June Paik. The first Steidl book, Befragung der documenta, was published in 1972. Political non-fiction, literary works and selected art and photography volumes followed. Steidl launched his own international photo book program in 1994. He has worked with Dayanita Singh for over twenty years.
Monte Packham was born in Sydney and graduated in law and art history from the University of Sydney. His books include Concentric Circles (2011), ABC Photography (2016), and Living with Matisse, Picasso and Christo: Theodor Ahrenberg and His Collections (2018). He has worked as an editor at Steidl Verlag since 2007. Packham lives in Berlin.
